Dedicated Server Setup

So you want to set up your own server? Well it’s really very simple with Plain Sight. Plain sight has it’s own dedicated server, which uses very little CPU and memory.

Requirements
The Plain Sight dedicated server is currently Windows only and only supports single mode servers so you are unable to mix game types. In order to run PlainSightServer.exe you must have the .NET 3.5 Runtime Framework as well as XNA GS 3.1 installed.

In addition, you may need to forward ports if you are behind a router or otherwise require access through your firewall. The default port Plain Sight uses is 24816.

First Things First.
You can obtain the dedicated server files in one of two ways:

You can download the dedicated server software from the account section at http://www.plainsightgame.com/.

Or if you have Steam running on your server, the files are already up-to-date and included in your ...\Program Files (x86)... \Steam\steamapps\common\plain sight\DedicatedServer\ directory.

Example Configuration File
The “Dedicated Server Readme” text file lists all of the currently supported maps and other commands to assist you in building your own server configuration file. Below is an example dediconfig.txt used to create a Deathmatch server. Additional notes to assist you have been included as comments prefixed with // - do not include these in your final configuration files.

Chat Commands

There are a number of commands that can be entered via text chat.

Dedicated Server Admin Login
This makes your player an Admin for the server. (Games created from the normal game client are automatically their own Administrators.)

Controlling Bot Numbers
You can force bots to spawn or despawn by changing the maximum number of bots, Admin Required.

Manual Map Rotation
These commands allow you to insert the named map into the map rotation while in game on a server, Admin Required.

/nextmap mapname
/map mapname

Kick/Vote Kick a player
You can initiate a kick vote for a named player. Only one kick vote can be active at a time

/kick playername

These commands allow you to vote for or against kicking a player from a server.

Changing Teams
If the teams are currently balanced you will be placed in a queue until an opponent also makes a request to change teams.

This sends a request to the server to switch which team you are playing on in team game modes.

Houston, We have UH-OH!

Attempting to run a dedicated server out of the proverbial box for the first time sometimes comes with the painful question which may look something like “Why is this not !#@%ing working?!” after an error occurs or if it crashes horribly. But not to worry! Here are a few known issues you can look for to ensure that you’re not going crazy and that your configuration is fine.

White space & Formatting
Make sure your dediconfig.txt file is well formatted and stripped free of comments (lines preceded by //, or anything that’s not a command), excess line feeds (returns) and white space (excess tabs or spaces) before and after each option. Sometimes there’s that stray space or carriage return that goofs things up on launch which results in the server application crashing.

Crashing is bad, mmkay?

Bizarro Undocumented Commands

Either they’re old legacy commands, or some super-secret settings left over by the developers for a stealthy future update. We don’t know! But if it’s not documented then it may be safe to exclude it from your configuration. Who knows, it might just work! Just don’t forget to make a backup!

Currently, you might find a few questionable settings in your default dedicated configuration file. Through rigorous testing and throwing our keyboard at the wall, our well trained ninja researchers have managed to deduce that these commands shipped with the server just cause it to crash on launch. It would be advisable that you make a backup copy of the default configuration and remove the following settings from your final file for now. At least until we get clarification on exactly what they’re meant to do.

teamplay:false
teams:0

Oh man! Double out-of-bounds error, what does it mean?! Oh man!

Troubleshooting Crashes
When the PlainSightServer.exe crashes, it usually doesn’t stick around long enough to let you know. So how can you know what happened when the screen closes immediately? Luckily the developers in their divine wisdom planned ahead for just such an event. In your dedicated server directory will find a document aptly titled ErrorLog.txt which describes in short why exactly it went bananas. Sometimes the information in this document is useful (it can for example, warn you when your Updater directory is missing), other times it contains a lot of gibberish which can still be useful to the great people in tech support.

Rules

The Lighten Up game mode is somewhat similar to DeathMatch (DM) game mode but with a slight twist. In order to collect points on the scoreboard you must successfully detonate on a randomly selected platform or section of the given map which acts as the goal. This randomly selected area will be highlighted with a distinct glow until the goal timer expires. When this goal timer expires, a new area will be chosen at random as the new goal area where players must reach in order to make their detonations count. This will repeat until time on the map runs out

“The biggest single detonation on a lit up area wins the round.”

Make your detonations count.

(aka. exploding robots everywhere)

Rules
The basic rules are simple:

Gain energy by killing enemies!
Gain multipliers with killing sprees!
Gain even more multipliers with kills during a Meltdown!

To actually get points you have to blow yourself up successfully! (at best in a crowd with a decent number of collected energy)

Strategy

First of all: Don’t bother buying the shield upgrade, especially on a crowded server!
As there are at least 3 Players at any given time with an enabled flamesword hammering like maniacs on the attack button. (Some do this even without flamesword)
Also try to avoid blowing yourself up after a single kill. It’s only 1 point and 1 exp. (the 1 exp. you also get if killed) and it will make you look like a total paranoid moron.

Instead you can:

1. Get the flamesword perk and start hammering like a maniac and blowing yourself up after 3 - 5 kills.
It might be useful to upgrade Dash Charge and Dash Power early.
So you may score some kills during your flamesword recharge time.

2. Stay the *bleep* away of those flameswords, get yourself the Dash Power upgrade and snipe them from a distance, while they are dashing around, distorted in space and then run as hell away from the crowd.

In this case it also might be useful to purchase the Warning Lvl 1 upgrade.
So you will know if someone is following you, then you can simply turn around continue jumping backwards, locating your pursuer and then snipe them aswell.

3. Go and buy Jump or Run upgrades (depends on map) and Dash Power upgrades and start pursuing a specific target yourself. But beware; they might turn around and kill you.

This is known to lead to some funny situations; as you might be hunted as well, leading to chains of 4 players, everyone hunting the player in front of them, jumping ad infinitum through the map, as most players never release their charged Dash except the crosshair turns red or their prey is killed.

Most of the time the foremost player accidentally jumps into a crowd of flamesword maniacs (he was looking behind checking where his red ! came from) and gets killed.
The 2nd Player utterly confused stops his jumping for a moment, getting himself killed by the 3rd, while the 3rd is now killed by the 4th, which now proceeds to jump into the maniacs cloud, blowing himself up and scoring a win.

New for version 1.2!!!

As a match progresses, you’ll notice shiny stars littered around the map. Collecting a star awards you with +1 Energy. In addition, stars will give you one star credit towards buying a Persistent Perk and speed up the recharge rate of a Persistent Perk (but have no effect on the cool down period) by 10 seconds. Once you have bought a Persistent Perk (from the “Pick Perks” tab in create or join game) you can take them into a game and use them strategically any time you wish. You can bring up to 3 Persistent Perks into a game. Each Perk has an power cost to use and a cool down period before you can use them again. You can buy the Persistent Perks by clicking on the “Buy Perks” button located in the Pick Perks tab.

There are nine kinds of persistent perks in Plain Sight:

Flaming Sword: A very powerful Perk that catches your sword on fire. While active, your attack will require no charge. So a single mouse click will fire you towards your enemies.

Also, your attacks will penetrate enemy shields (except those with mega perk shields), rendering them useless. If you hit someone with the Invincible Shield powerup, you will lose your Flaming Sword, but they will also lose their Shield.

Invincible Shield: You get a shield that automatically blocks all incoming attacks and protects you from Meltdowns. If a Flaming Sword hits you, you will lose your shield, and they will lose their Flaming Sword.

Stealth: This fun little Perk turns you really small, lets you move super fast, stops the ground from lighting up under your feet, and prevents the color streak coming out of your back from appearing. Your enemies will never see you coming, and you can assassinate them before they even figure out where you are.

Chain Detonation: This Perk causes any player caught in your Meltdown to Meltdown as well.

Vacuum Bomb: This Perk drops a small dark sphere, sucking everyone but the person who dropped it into an orbit around the sphere. This sets them up for an easy take-down (providing they don’t escape with the “Break Lock” Perk)!

Perk Void: This Perk creates a big pink cube of safety in which all perks (both Persistent and otherwise) are turned off!

Target Decoy: Lock onto a target and use this Perk to turn him into a huge glowing decoy so everyone goes after him! Target Decoy will be worth a whopping 15 points so it might be worth going after him yourself! The robot will be unable to explode for 30 seconds while a Decoy making him an easy Target, however he will be invulnerable to normal attacks for the first 10 seconds. He will automatically detonate after the 30 second period so make sure to get him quick! And make sure he doesn’t get into the “safety” of a Perk Void cube!

Big Bang: Double the size of your explosions!! What’s more awesome than a white meltdown? A white meltdown which is double the size!!!

Break Lock: This Perk breaks the lock on anyone who targets you and allows you a chance to escape the dreaded Vacuum Bomb!

Attacking

Category:Beginners Guide

Another basic mechanic that will take some getting used to is the targeting system.

Steps to hit an opponent :

1) stand in front of opponent
2) get close enough so that you can see a blue crosshair
3) click and hold the left mouse button.
4) ... this builds up your attack charge. The longer you hold it down, the further you’ll dash forward
5) you’ll see that and amber crosshair moves toward your enemy.
6) when it goes red. let go.
7) as long as your opponent has not moved dodged/blocked etc, you’ll score a hit and steal their energy.

Here are some additional points to know:

-When your targeting indicator turns red, it indicates that your “shot” is lined up. However, this doesn’t always guarantee a hit. Sometimes the indicator becomes red when there is part of an object in the way, which you will glace off of and end up missing. Be aware of that little red line and ensure it doesn’t pass through or too close to any surfaces before you try attacking.

-On a similar note, the red targeting indicator tells you that given both players’ current speeds and trajectories, your dash will hit them. If the target suddenly dashes, changes direction, or otherwise messes with their speed/trajectory too much, you will still miss. Also, if you attack your target at the same time they attack you, both of you will be repelled and the attacks will cancel. Make sure to watch for moments when your opponent will be unable to maneuver and release your dash at that point.

-A red targeting indicator is not always required to hit. If you’re close to your target and the indicator isn’t red yet, you might still be able to hit them. Also, once you begin dashing for an attack, the enemy might move INTO a position to get hit. Keep your eyes open for these moments, and with time and experience, you’ll start to learn when dashing early is appropriate.

- While charging up a dash, you cannot change targets or aquire a target. Be sure to target someone to launch an attack, or your charged up energy will result in a regular dash.
